Actually Jim, with your 40D and the Photomatix software it is quite easy. See those C1, C2 and C3 settings on your mode dial. You can preset the AEB to get the 7 exposures with +/-3 needed for a shot like this.

Alan, I set C1 to AV (RAW), F8, ISO 100, Landscape, AF= One shot, WB-Cloud, Drive= single shot. C2 to AV (RAW) F8, AEB -3 -2 -1, ISO 100, Landscape, AF= One shot, WB=Cloud Drive=High speed continuous. C3 to AV (RAW) F8, AEB +1 +2 +3, ISO 100, Landscape, AF= One shot, WB=Cloud Drive=High speed continuous. So, by pressing the shutter button on C1 I get the one shot (0) then turning to C2 and holding down the shutter I get the next 3 shots and then the same for C3. Total is 7 exposures at -3 -2 -1 0 +1 +2 +3 AEB of +/-3. Import into Photomatix ($100) adjust curves in PS and Bob’s your Uncle.
